Steinmeier Meets Minority Representatives in Flensburg

05 October 2017. German Federal President Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Flensburg.

During his visit in Schleswig-Holstein, German Federal President Mr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier conducted a meeting with the representatives of minority organizations and minority groups in Flensburg. The meeting was held in Flensborghus and was hosted by DialogForumNorden.

ECMI Director Prof. Dr. Tove Malloy took part in the meeting and presented recent activities of the ECMI. She spoke about the findings of the research project on “Bridge Building and Integration in Diverse Societies” and highlighted the importance of “minority protection as an integral part of democracy”. She also mentioned work of the ECMI in Ukraine and recent developments in the region.

Importance of minority politics was the primary focus of speech of the Ministerpresident of the Land Schleswig-Holstein Mr. Daniel Günther. “The sad events in Spain clearly show the importance of good minority politics in a state”, mentioned Mr. Günther, “Once again, it became clear that respect and trust are essential. Schleswig-Holstein is an example in this regard for many regions in Europe and worldwide. The majority and minorities live together in peaceful coexistence. Moreover, we are proud of our cultural diversity…”.
