With the title: “What is the Protocol to Ensure Language Rights and how can we contribute to it?” the event will feature guests from the Basque Countries as well as experts and minority representatives from the Danish-German border region. The Flensburg City President Ms. Swetlana Krätzschmar will welcome the guests, followed by opening remarks by Prof. Dr. Tove Malloy.
The panel discussion is organized in the framework of the project initiated by the Council of Social Entities for the Basque Language, Kontseilua, and the Donostia/San Sebastián 2016 European Cultural Capital Foundation. Together with the Organising Committee consisting of 6 international organizations and experts, the project promoters aim to establish the Protocol to Ensure Linguistic Rights and present the conclusions to an international summit meeting in December 2016 under the auspices of Donostia’s year as European Capital of Culture 2016.
What is the Protocol to Ensure Language Rights?
The Protocol is a document defending language equality and supporting the development of languages in adverse situations. Drafted by a scientific committee and ratified by citizens’ bodies, it will contain the minimum steps needed to safeguard all citizens’ language rights. The promoters are backed by an Organising Committee consisting of internationally well-known entities which are in charge of defining the values and principles of the project. Together with the ECMI, the members of the Organising Committee are: the Unrepresented Nations’ and Peoples’ Organization (UNPO), European Language Equality Network (ELEN), PEN International, CIEMEN and LINGUAPAX International.
