The October elections in Georgia mean new players in the field of minority issues. Paata Zakareishvili is new Minister for Reintegration.
Power transfers have recently been taking place in several government agencies of Georgia. This is the result of the watershed elections for the winning opposition coalition Georgian Dream.
The European Centre for Minority Issues Caucasus’ most prominent strategic partner is the Ministry for Reintegration. From 25 October the ministry is headed by Paata Zakareishvili.
Zakareishvili is a well-known Georgian political scientist and a member of the Republican Party. Paata Zakareishvili has been particularly active in the field of conflict resolution with Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
ECMI Caucasus will work with the new minister on reviewing the achievements of minority policies to date. Further, ECMI Caucasus will assist in the elaboration of a next phase of minority integration.
ECMI Caucasus plans a series of meetings with other key ministries relevant to minority issues. These are in the fields of education, regional development and culture.
